Initial cork photography

For my Cork photograph I knew I wanted to produce a photograph made up of lots of images in the style of David Hockney's 'joiners'. I went out and tried to find some interesting places in Bath, I decided to use black and white film as the outcome would be unpredictable but unique similar to that of John Lowings's photography. This meant I used a lot of film but the actual photos when I developed them were of quite nice quality and in focus. I had a good range of images which I could use and instead of developing them which would have been very time consuming I decided to use the negative scanner so I could then combine them in Photoshop. The process of creating the collage was actually fairly easy as I had an image of the whole bridge to work from. I copied and pasted each image onto a blank canvas until I had the final image. I then adjusted the contrast to make the black and white area of the image more visible and give the image dramatic appeal like the images John Lowing's has produced. I then added a dark grey background to make the image stand out more. This worked better than black or white and I felt it complimented the image.
When the image was printed I went over to the Cork to get my frame. I carefully removed the original image and inserted mine. I put it back up on the wall with a small plaque saying a little information about my image.

Leaftet

Working as a team we came up with some ideas for a leaftet and how it could be folded. The final piece is very successful it holds everyones posters and other information about the festival.

Under a monkey 2010

I followed the progress of a show being put up at my college. I monitored a room once a week to check on progress and to see the way in which they organised the event and put up the show. The above pictures show how the show is being put up and the progress made. I learned that you should get help or work as a team when putting up a show as feedback and an extra pair of hands makes a huge difference.

Advertising

My partner and I have decided to make a poster to advertise our show. We decided to make the poster grey and dark colours so we could have the company's logo on it which would stand out more. I created a background using Photoshop from a scanned piece of paper which I then turned grey and added a filter to. I found a font called 'birth of a hero' which was quite suitable for the poster. I then wrote few lines of text including our names and the time and date of our show and added the logo. I am quite happy with the way the poster turned out although I think it may have been more effective to put one of our photographs on it, unfortunately we could not decide which so decided to keep it basic.

Health and Safety Risk assesment

There are more Health and Safety issues than I had thought and I filled out this form to be more aware of them. My partner suggested a hazard in which as the shop is fairly small to come in at a quiet time when we wouldn't disturb people ordering drinks and get in their way.

press release

We decided to write press release to help advertise our show. We wanted to keep it quite formal and hold information that is both relevant and interesting.

"Charlie Williams and Kate Howes are students from the City of Bath College. They have been studying photography for two years in both film and digital. As part of project they are required to collaborate with a local business and set up an art exhibition in the premises.
Using a mixture of digital and film photography, Charlie and Kate have set up a show in a cafe in Kings mead Square, called Eat5*. The work displayed shows black and white atmospheric pictures of bath, with digital manipulation that allows the images to be in keeping with the decor of the cafe."

Target Audience

the target audience for my work I believe will be middle aged people on their lunch break or workers who have stopped in for a coffee. The business attracts a lot of customers who generally come in for lunch and a coffee, these people are of all ages but the majority are middle aged and coming in from work for a break. He believes that they would enjoy black and white photographs and highlight the place they are working/visiting. He would like images of Bath as he said he gets a lot of people in asking where would be a nice place to visit or asking for directions, photographs of Bath would be helpful then for him to show tourists areas of Bath which may not necessarily be well known. I will therefore take photographs of Bath and try to include areas which are not as famous or subject matter which is interesting and unique. With our show up I believe it will attract more tourists and people wishing to find out more about Bath, it is here the company may benefit as there is more publicity for the venue. I believe to reach the widest audience possible I need to try to appeal to the majority of the audience who visit the shop which is middle aged men and women coming in from work, and also tourists. I will take Ed's advice and focus on Bath and interesting aspects of it.
